(Poets) - Instead of embracing politics as writers of some other eras might have (and indeed some writers of the Romantic era did) the Romantics turned to poetry for self-fulfillment. They were turning away from the values and ideas of the previous era, embracing new ways of expressing their imagination and feelings. Instead of a concentration on "head," the intellectual focus of reason, they preferred to rely on the self, in the radical idea of individual freedom. Instead of striving for perfection, the Romantics preferred "the glory of the imperfect."
Music:
(Musicians) - The music of the Classical period reflected the artistic and intellectual ideals of its time. Form was important, providing order and boundaries. Music was seen as abstract art, universal in its beauty and appeal, above the pettiness’s and imperfections of everyday life. It reflected, in many ways, the attitudes of the educated and the aristocratic of the "Enlightenment" era. Classical music may sound happy or sad, but even the emotions stay within acceptable boundaries.
Painting:
(Artists) - Romantic artists interpreted things through their own emotions, and these emotions included social and political consciousness--as one would expect in a period of revolution, one that reacted so strongly to oppression and injustice in the world. So artists sometimes took public stands, or wrote works with socially or politically oriented subject matter.
Plays:
(Performers) - old and new, tended to appeal to emotions rather than intellect. Special effects therefore focused on the supernatural and the mysterious – visual over verbal, sensational rather than intellectual. Aristocrats tended to go to the opera and ballet, and more middle-class now went to the theatre.
